3dRender.com : Glossary : Scanline

Scanline - a horizontal line of image information that makes up a video frame.  If you are rendering images for video, the height of your rendering in pixels equals the number of scanlines.

A frame in the NTSC video standard displays 480 or 486 scanlines of useful image information, PAL or SECAM formats can display 580 or 586.  If you count extra scanlines that do not contain picture information, a full NTSC frame consists of 525 scanlines, and PAL and SECAM contain 625.
